Why movement comes before fitness

Fitness is how much work your body can do. Movement is how well it does that work. Build the first without the second and you are revving a misfiring engine.

Every January I watch the same story unfold. Someone decides this is the year, joins a gym or a bootcamp, goes hard for three or four weeks, and then a knee, a shoulder or a back pulls the handbrake. They conclude they are injury-prone, or too old, or not built for exercise. They are none of those things. They just did the steps in the wrong order.

Fitness amplifies whatever it is built on

Training is repetition under load. Whatever pattern you repeat, you strengthen. If your squat pattern is sound, squats build strong, resilient legs. If your hips are stiff and your knees cave to compensate, every rep rehearses and reinforces that compensation, now with added weight and fatigue.

That is the part most fitness programs skip: load does not fix a movement problem. Load multiplies it. A small hitch that was harmless on the couch becomes a genuine injury risk at a hundred repetitions a week.

Where the compensations come from

Almost every adult I assess is carrying compensations they do not know about. Years at a desk, an ankle sprain from 2009 that "healed fine", a caesarean, a decade of riding, a frozen shoulder that thawed but never got retrained. The body is superb at working around problems. It borrows movement from neighbouring joints, mutes weak muscles, narrows your usable range, and keeps you functioning.

You do not feel the workaround. You feel its bill, years later, as the sore knee or the back that "goes" for no reason.

The right order

This is why every client at my studio starts the same way, whatever their goal:

  • Assess. Map what moves well, what does not, and what is compensating for what.
  • Restore movement. Win back the ranges and patterns the body has lost.
  • Improve function. Wire the restored movement into real patterns: squat, hinge, push, pull, carry.
  • Build strength and fitness. Now load it. Now the fitness sticks, because it is built on something solid.

Clients are sometimes surprised that the first weeks are not exhausting. That is deliberate. We are not avoiding hard work; we are earning the right to do it safely. The hard work comes, and when it does, the body is ready for it.

If you have started and stopped fitness more times than you would like, read about movement restoration, or book a movement assessment in Ballajura and start in the right order this time.

Start in the right order

Assessment first, then movement, then strength. Book your movement assessment at the Ballajura studio.
